Naked City
by
Lloyd Corporation

Lloyd Corporation has been invited to create a new artwork for the collection of the Frans Hals Museum. Their artwork Naked City is a unique installation that was made especially for the Haarlem context and is about the public space of Haarlem.

About Naked City

For Naked City the artists have taken a selection of these street notices as the basis for a series of large-scale hand-painted and printed panels, highlighting specific texts and graphics from the original notices. Words such as ‘freedom’ become complex and layered, as they recur across the panels but draw from dramatically different contexts; from climate change to Palestinian rights campaigns; anti-government protests and covid-19 propaganda to local business advertisements.

The installation is mounted on a fencing structure outside of the museum, directly facing the street, encouraging passersby to engage with these questions. Situated on the site of The Egelantier – a building in the process of redevelopment from a public space to a private hotel – the work simultaneously draws attention to a local situation in Haarlem, where residents are questioning which voices will be given a place in shaping the future of the city.

About Lloyd Corporation

Lloyd Corporation is an artist duo consisting of Ali Eisa (1987, United Kingdom) and Sebastian Lloyd Rees (1986, Norway). Through their artworks, Lloyd Corporation explore how found objects can tell stories about the social, political, and economic forces that shape society. Naked City is the artists’ first commission in the Netherlands and builds upon their long-term interests in informal economies and cultures that exist on the margins of the city. The new commission specifically extends Lloyd Corporation’s practice collecting street notices and advertisements from different cities across the world.
